Memorial Thoughts

Today is not a normal day. For me.

Today I am going to a memorial service for the man who showed me what hard work looks like. The man who had more willpower and stubbornness than probably anyone I’ve ever known. The man who taught me that to stand up for what I believe in, even if others don’t. The man who never let on if he was disappointed in my decisions or actions, who only ever showed me love and support.

He may not have been this man for everyone, but he was for me.

He was my co-conspirator, my role model, one of my spiritual leaders, and best of all my grandfather. Every memory I have of him is happy, filled with love and mischief. He was the man I unknowingly held every other man up to, and I’ll miss his fire. All I’ve wanted for over a week now is one more of his amazing hugs. They were filled with care, felt like shelter, and always put a smile on my face; even when I started out not wanting one.

I love my grandfather so much, and I will miss him the rest of my life.
